Curriculum Overview
Food Technology Vision
Food Technology is an essential subject for any student, this life skill offers pupils an understanding of personal hygiene and a knowledge of different beliefs and cultures surrounding foods. Students will be exposed to contemporary issues around food and a working knowledge of nutrition and how it contributes to a person’s health and wellbeing. Students are inspired and challenged to imagine and create a range of dishes by being exposed to a variety of cultural and celebratory dishes.
Students will develop their culinary skills and their critical thinking skills to develop their own recipes and menus for varied audiences. Food Technology develops student’s literacy, numeracy, communication and emotional literacy skills as students embark on team work in a kitchen. These skills are key to further education, in working life and living, fulfilling and healthy lifestyles.

Key Stage 4 Courses
Homework
Food Technology homework booklets will be provided to students. These booklets contain project-based homework tasks to reflect the main aims of the Food Technology Curriculum. Any specific or unusual resources and materials will be provided by the department. The homework booklets and projects can also be worked on within the after-school sessions in the department.
Enrichment Opportunities
The Food Technology department will continue to offer a range of enrichment opportunities which are designed to enhance and extend. The Design Technology department will be offering a range of enrichment opportunities designed to enhance and extend the student experience of the subject, these include trips, after school clubs and workshops with visiting experts.
Visits to local Hospitality and Catering companies, further education establishments and nationally run practical contests between schools will provide students with exposure to Food Technology in real life scenarios, helping to give students an insight and provide context for what they learn in Food Technology.
After school Food Technology Cooking clubs will also be running. These clubs will provide students with an opportunity to both extend their in-classroom learning and develop brand new skills, all within a creative and welcoming environment
Exploring Careers in Food Technology
Throughout all of the projects within Food Technology, a variety of careers are highlighted to students, presenting the link to real life and once again allowing them to understand their learning context.
The following careers are covered in KS3:
Year 7: Health and Safety Inspector, Dietitian, Baker, Business owner, Chef.
Year 8: Food Technologist, Product Manager, Teacher, lecturer, Food Technician.
Year 9: Nutritional Therapist, Nutritionist Product/Process Development Scientist, Food Microbiologist.
KS4: Pupils learn about careers through Further Education visits and workshops.
